The geyser in your bathroom or kitchen is definitely one of the most important home appliances there is. Not just it heats water for your bathing needs but also for various other purposes such as washing utensils, cooking food and many others. But geysers can encounter certain problems from time to time which may be solvable but can create temporary problems. One of such issues is geyser tripping main switch.  There can be many reasons for this and the solution will depend upon the cause. Thus we have listed the main reasons for geyser tripping main switch as well as the solutions:

1. Water dripping on the electrical lines

REASON: One of the most common reasons for geyser tripping main switch is water dripping on the electrical lines.  It is a fact that a leak which allows water to drip on or contact with any electrical parts or components can prove to be dangerous.  This leak can be caused due to a failing gasket which must be repaired.

SOLUTION: It is suggested that you contact a professional for repair purpose as it can prove risky to do this on your own.

2. A malfunctioning thermostat

REASON: Another common cause for geyser tripping main switch is a malfunctioning thermostat.  Thermostat is an important part of the appliance. It helps you control the temperature of the water that the geyser heats.

SOLUTION: If it becomes faulty then it is important to replace it, especially in the case of tripping of the circuit breaker.  In this case it may be a good idea to replace the heating element as well. You can check the functioning of the thermostat through a multimeter.

3. Burnt out heating element

REASON: If none of the above given points are not the reasons for your geyser tripping main switch, then the possible cause could be burnt out heating element. Most geysers have two heating elements-one at the top and the other at the bottom.  When the heating elements fail, they simply burn out and the best way to detect this is when you observe that the water isn’t as hot as it used to be. In some cases, the heating element casing may split up and may expose the electrical components directly to the tank or water.  This may result in the short circuit flipping the high limit switch on the geyser and result in tripping of the main switch.

SOLUTION: The only solution here is to replace the heating element altogether.

Seems this 3KW Bajaj instant geyser is having issues. As in, after turning it on, we have good hot water coming and after around 3-4 minutes the MCB switch will trip. We have a 16A MCB switch connected to this geyser and it can use for next bath almost after 4-5 minute. This issue objarved in monsun/rainy and winter season so give your feedback on the same…
    1. Confirm 16 A mbc switch is enough or more?
    2. Wiring is checked with electrician.

My geyser was tripping the main, I then switched that off for 48 hours, got a plumber, switched it on and no tripping but water not getting hot? We then you replaced the element (which had holes in it), thermostat, thermostat pocket and t&p valve and reconnected wires; switched the main back on and nothings happening, there’s sound by the geyser, nor is the main tripping, what could be wrong?

I think there is a leakage and water is dripping to one of the conductors. Initially the thermostat was faulty and as it was replaced, it was not properly fitted and hence a leakage.

Hi we recently had our thermostat replaced in our geyser. It was causing water to not heat and power to trip. There were no tripping issues before this happened. Since the plumbers have replaced the thermostat not even a month later and power is tripping again. They say it’s not the thermostat and it’s not the element (not sure how they checked this?) they say it’s the wiring from the circuit breaker to the geyser. This does not sound right to us as we have been in this house for almost 20 years and never had a faulty circuit breaker??
    Please help?
