Not just it heats water for your bathing needs but also for various other purposes such as washing utensils, cooking food and many others. But geysers can encounter certain problems from time to time which may be solvable but can create temporary problems. One of such issues is geyser tripping main switch.  There can be many reasons for this and the solution will depend upon the cause. Thus we have listed the main reasons for geyser tripping main switch as well as the solutions:

1. Water dripping on the electrical lines

2. A malfunctioning thermostat

REASON: Another common cause for geyser tripping main switch is a malfunctioning thermostat.  Thermostat is an important part of the appliance. It helps you control the temperature of the water that the geyser heats.

SOLUTION: If it becomes faulty then it is important to replace it, especially in the case of tripping of the circuit breaker.  In this case it may be a good idea to replace the heating element as well. You can check the functioning of the thermostat through a multimeter.

3. Burnt out heating element

REASON: If none of the above given points are not the reasons for your geyser tripping main switch, then the possible cause could be burnt out heating element. Most geysers have two heating elements-one at the top and the other at the bottom.  When the heating elements fail, they simply burn out and the best way to detect this is when you observe that the water isn’t as hot as it used to be. In some cases, the heating element casing may split up and may expose the electrical components directly to the tank or water.  This may result in the short circuit flipping the high limit switch on the geyser and result in tripping of the main switch.

SOLUTION: The only solution here is to replace the heating element altogether.
