Tips and Tricks to Keep Your House Warm in the Winter

If you associate December with freezing feet and shivers all over your body, it might be a sign that your home is too cold and probably not properly insulated. Wrapping up in your favorite blanket or two, with a cup of hot chocolate or tea and layering with sweaters and hoodies might be an option. There are more convenient ways to keep yourself from freezing, though.

If you’d like to feel warm and toasty when you are at home and don’t want to spend a fortune on energy bills, make a few modifications to your home. Follow these simple tips to enjoy a warm house, and save some money!

1.   Rugs

Fluffy rugs and carpets make the indoors look cozier, but it’s not only about the looks! A stylish wooden floor can also contribute to poor insulation. This is especially true (ironically) if you live in a place like California. Older houses simply don’t have proper insulation, and the assumption is that “it doesn’t get that cold”. Although temperatures rarely drop below freezing, a few days of the thermometer dropping down into the 60s can make it seem like you live in the Arctic.  Drafts between floorboards can be easily covered with a warming carpet. What’s more, most of the body heat flees through the feet. To prevent that, step on the rug, instead of cold wood, or even worse, linoleum. You can feel warm, even when you forget to put on your slippers!

2.   Roofing

The type of roofing you have can determine the temperature inside your house. Firstly, the color of your roof matters. You might remember from physics lessons that lighter colors reflect heat away, and darker colors absorb it. Then, If you live in a place with harsh winters, make your roof darker as it will absorb more heat and shift it to the house.

Moreover, the material of roofing determines the moderate temperature inside. Metal roofs are reflective. Hence, the sunlight is reflected from it, and your home temperature maintains even through a year. However, the different weather conditions might demand more advanced solutions such as EPDM roofing. The material is water-resistant and weather-proof. If you are endangered with gales and vast snowfall, consider roofing modifications for your safety and warmth. Of course, if you live in a condo or an apartment, it’s a different story.

3.   Heavy Curtains

Curtains are another type of decor that can make you feel cozier and provide you with an extra insulation layer. If you want your house to be warmer, consider the darker ones. They are vogueish and make your living room look modern, but that’s not the only reason!

Thin summer curtains are one of the main reasons for the cold outside air affecting the indoor temperature. Drawing heavy curtains on your windows when the sun goes down will prevent heat from escaping into the night.

4.   Air Circulation

You might need to do a little redecorating. Make sure that furniture isn’t blocking your heaters. If your heater is cornered by a bookshelf on one side and the couch on the other, it might not be as effective. The furniture will absorb and block heat.

It’s much better to have furniture away from your heaters so that the air can circulate freely and heat the whole living space evenly.

5.   Thermostat

Invest in a programmable thermostat and adjust the temperature inside to the time of the day. You can set it up so that you wake up in the warm bedroom and fall asleep at the optimal temperature.

It’s a real money saver and comfort provider. You can save even one quarter on the energy bills if you keep the temperature low when you are outside and bump it up from your mobile before you get back from work. The feeling of a welcoming, warming house is worth the price!

It’s also very useful if you want to control your house temperature when you’re away – through an app. You can turn on your heater an hour before you get home from work. This way, your house can heat up slowly and you won’t feel the need to blast the hot air when you get home and you’re freezing.

6.   New Boiler

If you live in a house where the boiler is at least half as old as you are, consider replacing it with the newer model. Electric boilers are much more efficient than the older gas models. Even if it seems to be a sizable expense at first, it can help you save money in the long-term as it uses less energy to produce more heat.

Moreover, it’s prevention from unpleasant surprises such as boiler failure on one of the coldest winter days, and they are more environmentally friendly. There are no drawbacks!

Conclusions

Whenever it gets colder outside, it seems as though our everyday troubles get bigger and more problematic than they actually are. A lot of this is due to the fact that once the temperature drops below optimal levels, it is difficult to stay focused, productive, not to mention keeping a positive attitude!

Make this winter exceptional, and stay on your toes when the frost is ready to attack your house. Use this opportunity as a reason for a little redecorating, and break up with your beloved double blanket. Hopefully, our easy tips will make this winter pleasant and your bills lower. Prepare yourself a cup of hot chocolate with whipped cream and relish your warm home!
