Deck Design Ideas: Make the Most of Your Deck This Winter

When people think of using their deck they might picture sunny days and warm nights in summer and spring, but with the right decking ideas in place, there’s no reason you can’t enjoy your deck in the colder months too.

Autumn and winter can be a great time for friends and family to come together and keep warm and cosy on the deck, be it around a fire, heater or hot meal. Winter decking design ideas won’t just keep you nice and warm, they’ll also help protect your deck in the wet and windy seasons.

Enhance Your Outdoor Lighting

One of the best ways to improve your decking is to add some quality lighting options. Brightening up your deck will make it a more inviting place during the colder months and will give you the opportunity to start using your deck for other great ideas.

Proper deck lighting is a great investment for your home, as it will be useful all year round. Coloured lighting and otherdecking design ideascan make your deck stand out as an impressive entertaining area, while also adding value to your home.

Add Some Outdoor Heating

An outdoor patio heater is a great way to add some style to your deck and keep it warm in the winter months. These gas heaters will come in handy on cold nights all year round and have the benefit of being easily portable.

Fireplaces and fire pits are also popular options for outdoor decks and can let you huddle around with family or friends and toast marshmallows on winter nights. When considering a fireplace or firepit it’s important to keep them elevated from your decking to avoid any overheating. Fibre-cement mats can also be used to help protect your decking from heat and stray sparks.

Get a Hot Tub

It doesn’t get much better than laying back in a hot tub while it’s cold outside. Hot tubs are a great addition to your deck that can be used no matter what the temperature is like outside. If you’re still planning your deck, there’s no better time to integrate a hot tub into its design.

If you’re considering installing a hot tub to your existing decking, make sure to check with an expert before installation, as there are a few requirements to check first such as positioning near your home and proper weight support.

Warm Up with Outdoor Cooking

Why not warm up by cooking a winter feast on your barbecue? Wrapping up for the colder weather and enjoying a nice hot meal outside can be a fun experience for the whole family. This idea can be a nice change of scenery and on clear nights will let you eat dinner underneath the stars.

Adding a clay pizza oven to your deck can be a great way to get the party started on colder nights. The big fireplace will help to warm things up, while the opportunity for guests to make their own pizza is a great reason to have friends and family over during winter.

Consider Adding Patio Covers

Adding a cover to your decking can let you use your deck during rain and will also help to shade you in summer. Installing a cover will also help to protect your deck from the damaging effect of wet weather. Canopy awnings and patio covers are a great way to use your deck in hail or shine and will help to keep you warm by trapping rising heat.

Screening on the side of your deck can also be a useful addition in winter. The right type of screening will add an aesthetic appeal to your deck, while protecting your privacy and your deck from harsh weather.

Upgrade Your Decking Materials

As any deck owner knows, between the sanding, staining and sealing it can take a lot of work to keep your deck in top condition. Unfortunately, when it comes to winter a lot of your work can come undone with damage from the weather. If you’re interested in using your deck during the winter months, consider building with a composite decking material.

Because composite wood is blended with plastic it gains a natural resistance to many weather conditions and is much easier to maintain. Modern composite wood captures the look and feel of genuine timber, giving you the best of both worlds with much less effort.

With a few additions and modifications to your deck, you’ll be able to enjoy a pleasant outdoor atmosphere the whole year round. What ideas will you use for your deck this winter? Let us know in the comments below.

Thanks for sharing all of these design ideas that I actually also find as very functional additions to an outdoor deck especially for winter. I recently got outdoor furniture set from WickerPark as the centerpiece of my patio that I built as some sort of project with the lockdown and stay-at-home protocol in place because of the ongoing pandemic. I’ll check and see which of these ideas I could add to my patio to make it ready and stay useful for winter.
