3 Plumbing issues that cause bad odor in your bathroom

A bathroom is a place where you freshen up, wash, bathe or perform regular grooming routine. It is a very important place in your home. However no one wants to enter in a smelly bathroom. A foul smell in the bathroom makes you unwilling to enter it and eager to come out. Room freshener is just a temporary solution for this stinking issue. Sometimes there can be some plumbing issues that cause bad odor in your bathroom. If your bathroom is smelly, you must figure out the root cause of it and get it fixed. The plumbing issues that cause bad odor in bathroom are:

Clogged Drains

A clogged drain can lead to foul smell in your bathroom. Over time long hair, dirt, soap scum, oil etc. get accumulated in the drain pipes and block the passage. As a result water cannot pass through the clogged drain. This standing water and accumulated waste produce rotten smell in your bathroom. To unblock the drain pipes, remove and clean the waste in the pipes yourself or call a plumber and get the clogged drain pipes cleaned.

You can use these recommendations for Cleaning your Clogged Drains:-

Dry pipes

Dry pipes also cause bad smell in your bathroom. Bathroom fittings like wash basin, toilet, bathtub, shower are connected to a U shaped pipe. This U shaped pipe is connected to the waste water pipe. This waste water pipe is hidden in the wall and  is not visible. One end of this waste water pipe is connected to the sewer system and the other end leads all the way up through the roof, letting fresh air in and pushing smelly sewer gases to vent out in the open atmosphere. You can’t see this system, as it is hidden in the wall.

This U shaped section is called the P-trap. In normal working conditions, a small amount of water stays in the P trap after you turn off the faucet, flush the toilet or close the shower head. This little water acts as a film and prevent foul gases from the sewage system to enter into your bathroom. This way the sewage gases flow past your bathroom and out through the vent pipe on roof.

But when the water in the U shaped trap dries out, the sewer gases do not vent out to the roof but enter into your bathroom. This causes a rotten smell in your bathroom.

The solution is to pour some water down the pipes. This should eliminate the problem of smell in the bathroom.

If your P-Trap is broken or needs replacement, we have some recommendations for you:-

Cracked & loose pipes

Cracks in the drain pipes and waste water pipes leads to seepage of dirty water and sewer gases in to your bathroom. This seepage causes foul smell in your bathroom. Call a plumber to repair and replace cracked pipes in bathroom.
