4 reasons behind a noisy refrigerator

Refrigerator making noise

Normal operation of your refrigerator will cause some sound. Some of the sounds that you commonly hear from your refrigerator are clicking or tic-toc sound which is heard when the defrost timer switches on-off, boiling or knocking sound is heard during the circulation of refrigerant, humming noise is heard when the ice maker fills with water. There can be many reasons behind a noisy refrigerator and it can make different types of noises. But when your refrigerator makes sounds that are not normal, you may require a technician for diagnosis.

Some reasons behind a noisy refrigerator are:

Fault in the condenser fan motor or blade

If your refrigerator is making loud noise, then condenser fan can be blamed. In frost free refrigerators a condenser fan is located near the compressor at the bottom of the refrigerator. A condenser fan circulates air over the condenser coil to remove heat produced in the process of compression of refrigerant. There are chances that some debris or obstruction might be preventing the condenser fan from moving freely or the fan blades might have worn out or the fan motor is at fault and needs to be replaced.

Here are some Condenser Fan Motors available on Amazon:-

Faulty evaporator fan motor or blade

If your refrigerator is making loud noise that appears to be coming from the freezer section, then the evaporator fan might be at fault. An evaporator fan is located in the freezer section which circulates cool air in the food section. There are chances that the evaporator fan blades are worn out or the fan blades have become loose, or the fan motor shaft does not turn freely. Sometimes due to defrost problem ice gets deposited on the fan blade, preventing the blades from moving freely. These obstructions in the free movement of evaporator fan, faulty motor, damaged blades etc. produce loud noise.

 Old and washed out compressor

The compressors are little loud and noisy. But if the noise become louder than normal, then the compressor might be at fault. If the noise continues to worsen, it is an indication that the compressor is likely to fail in the near future. A technician should look at this problem soon.

Clogging in the inter water valve

If your refrigerator makes noise, particularly when the ice  maker is filling, the inlet water valve might be at fault. Noise can be caused by the obstruction in the inlet valve from mineral and scale deposit. In such case the valve needs to be replaced.
