The installation of the split air conditioners is a crucial job. If the installation is done accurately your air conditioner will give optimum cooling, but if it is not done properly you won’t get the desired cooling effect. A poor installations also leads to frequent maintenance problems.
Several factors have to considered during the installation of split air conditioner.
1. Strength of wall to hold the AC
The indoor unit of split AC must be installed on a wall strong enough to hold the unit’s weight.
2. Proper spacing between wall and AC unit
The indoor unit of split AC requires at least 15 cm of open space surrounding its top and sides for proper air flow.
3. Appropriate installation height from ground
Mount the indoor unit of split AC at a height of 7-8 feet above the ground for adequate cooling inside the room
4. Correct tilt angle of indoor unit
While fixing the aluminum bracket on wall make sure that the bracket is given a slight tilt angle, so that the indoor unit of split AC, when fitted is also at a slight angle to enable unrestricted flow of the condensed water from the drain pipe.
5. Correct location of outdoor unit
For proper cooling, mount the indoor and outdoor units of split AC at location away from direct sunlight and water. Install the outdoor unit of split AC in open space so that there is no hindrance to the heat dissipated from the condenser.
6. Proper placement of outdoor unit
The outdoor unit of split AC must be placed on a flat and rigid surface. This unit contains key components of split AC like compressor, condenser, fan motor etc. If the unit is not on a flat surface then it will vibrate excessively, which can lead to the breakage of copper pipes, coolant leakage and compressor/condenser damage. Further, the vibrating unit makes lots of noise which could disturb you and your neighbors.

7. Right distance between indoor and outdoor unit
Correct distance between the indoor and outdoor unit plays a very important role in cooling. The coolant at very low temperature flows inside the copper tubes between indoor and outdoor units of split AC. There is always some loss of cooling effect to the atmosphere when the refrigerant flows between the units. Hence to reduce this loss, keep the distance between the indoor unit of split AC and the outdoor unit of split AC as minimum as possible. The maximum allowable distance between the indoor and the outdoor units of split AC can be about 15 meters.

I have bought a new OGEN 1 ton AC which is to be fixed tomorrow. Kindly advise if there is a bend in the pipes connecting the indoor unit to the outdoor unit will there be any loss of cooling or any other problem? Request you to reply immediately as the time is short
Hi Kannan, Please get the bend checked for leakage first. If there’s no leakages, there should not be any problems unless it’s a big bend that would restrict coolant circulation.

Is it better to install the split Unit AC on a flat roof or on the side of the building? The contractor is telling me it is better to do it on the roof, but it sounds like you are recommending that it is installed on the side of the building.
Hi Greg,
There’s no better out of the two locations. Just keep in mind the following factors to decide the right location for you.
1. The outdoor unit should be in a place with minimum exposure to dust and direct sunlight
2. The unit should be horizontally installed. Any angels will be induce vibrations.
3. The longer the distance between indoor and outdoor unit, more will be the losses in cooling.

Hi there, with regards to #3, would a higher BTU indoor unit be able to compensate for the increased distance between the outdoor unit and indoor unit?
Alex
Hi Alex, yes that can do the trick. But only do this if the distance is greater than 2 times manufacturer’s mentioned distance between the units (in most cases manufacturers mention an ideal distance of 3 meters). Otherwise you may over-compensate by going for a higher BTU. Over compensating will lead to the AC cooling the room very quickly and then getting cut-off, and then again cooling the room quickly. Thus, the cut-off cycles will become too frequent. This will reduce the life of your compressor.
Another good idea is to add another layer of insulation on the copper pipe which connects both the AC units.

Hi I have installed 5/8 pipe few months back . Now I have bought 1 ton split. It comes with 3/8 pipe. I can’t change the plpe as it is concealed. I hope it will not effect the cooling of the split. Please help
Hi Ravinder,
We are sorry to inform you that using a 5/8 copper pipe will affect AC’s cooling. This is because the compressor is designed to circulate coolant at a particular pressure (depends on the AC’s tonnage), thus using a wider pipe will reduce the pressure which intern reduces cooling capacity. We suggest you to use the pipes supplied with the AC. No need to take out the 5/8 pipe from the wall. Just get the 3/8 pipe installed parallely.

can i place CU over the door if no alternative location exist? would it jeopardize ashrae 15 requirement? , if so does a drip pan will solve that issue.

My indoor unit of 1.5 ton 183v Voltas AC felt from 3 Ft height on cemented floor at the time of installation. What may happen into it?
Hi Ajay, sorry to hear that!
Get the blower fan checked for proper functioning and cooling of the AC checked for any leakages. Damage to any other part won’t affect it’s performance.

We have installed a split ac where tge distance berween the 2 units…indoor and outdoor is as back to back on each side of the wall.however the pipe through which the gas passes for cooling is a 3 metre pipe coiled up and pinned to the wall.
Wont that result in loss of cooling.we dont need such a long pipe when the distance of travel of the gas is less than a metre.
Please advise…should the pipe be cut short?
we also have the same question.
can somebody answer this as soon as possible?
an authority on this is highly welcome.
Hi S.Basu and Sonali,
Sorry for the delayed respose. There is no practical loss in cooling capacity of the AC for a under 3meter connection. No need to cut the pipes.

I STAY IN CEMENT SHEET ROOM …. CAN I INSTALL SPLIT AC IN THAT ROOM PLEASE TELL ME
Hi Madhuri,
Cement sheets don’t have the rigidity to support a split AC. Thus, not recommended.

Can we fix tubelight under the split AC unit in the living room?
thanks for useable information, plz guide if distance between indoor to out door unit is approximately 90 ft, in this senerio is the split unit work properly
The information that talked about the indoor unit of a split AC and how it should be mounted at a height of 7-8 feet above the ground is what got my attention. I say that because my father went to the store to get a split AC unit to replace his old one. The last one he had was below the height of 7-8 feet.
Very helpful and informative post to share, I am visiting here for the first time and very much use the full article to write thanks to many dudes.

Thanks for a useful article. How do you want the indoor unit to be tilted – on one side or backward? A line diagram would be useful. My split AC was tilted to one side and that led to water seepage inside. I got it leveled with a spirit level and refixed – no seepage now! Cost me 3000 as gas had to be refilled. Aren’t split units designed to have a natural flow of water outside through the tube when installed level? I have not seen any split unit mounted with a tilt till date (except my own that was done incorrectly by Whirlpool – company with poor service record). I have seen window ACs mounted with outer edge tilted down to drain water but never a split AC. In fact Internet has guidelines that advise using spirit level to ensure level mounting of split AC unit !!!
How much minimum free space should be maintained in front of the fan grill of the outdoor unit of a 1TR split AC ?
Hi Indrajit,
The outer unit should be unobstructed upto a distance of 3 feets.

The building next to building has installed the outdoor unit in front of my kitchen. There is open utility between the a unit and my kitchen. Will the heat generated from the AC harm the air entering my kitchen?
no it will not
i think depends on the distance between the buildings
Thanks a lot for sharing this excellent info! I am looking forward to seeing more posts by you as soon as possible! I have judged that you do not compromise on quality.
