The AC may be functioning but the constant noise coming from the AC is getting out of hand. The most probable reason for an AC making noise would be improper mounting or installation of the AC.

There can be
several reasons behind a noisy air conditioner. The noise from your AC is a
clear indication that something is wrong inside the AC unit that needs repair.
Ignoring the noise from the AC may worsen the problem to a point where it
cannot be fixed or where fixing it will be an expensive affair.
Types of noises
an AC makes are:
Worn out compressor
A very common
reason behind “AC making noise “problem is a defective compressor. Air
conditioner compressor is almost always noisy. If the compressor of your AC is
making an unusual noise or is noisier than it used to be, it might be worn out
or wearing out. So if the compressor is more noisy than normal, it’s time you
need to pay attention. Screaming sound is very dangerous. It indicates that
there is a problem of internal pressure in your AC unit. If you hear a
screaming sound from your AC, turn off the AC unit immediately.
Obstruction in fan
There is one fan
at the front end and one fan at the rear end in an air conditioner. For a fan
to work properly, it must be kept clean and regularly maintained. If your AC
makes a humming or rattling noise, then the fan blades need to be checked.
Remove any debris you see on or around the blades. In some cases during AC
service, insulation or other items may fall into the AC unit and produce crackling
noise due to the movement of the blades. If the problem is not debris or dust,
then check to see if the blades itself are loose. If so, then blades need to be
tightened. Sometimes the fan blades bend slightly and touch the adjacent
component of the AC unit which produces noise.
Faulty fan motor or driver motor
If the AC is
noisy the fan motor, also called a dual shaft fan motor, might have gone bad. In
an AC the fan motor has bearings which needs to be permanently lubricated. Over
several years of operation the lubrication in AC bearings may break down making
the motor loud and noisy. The fan motor is usually not repairable and will need
to be replaced if it is noisy.
Defective motor belt or bearing
Sometimes you
hear a screeching or screaming sound from your AC. This noise indicates a bad
belt or motor bearing problems. AC belts are not normally an expensive repair.
Defective motor belt is a common reason behind AC making noise problem.
Faulty thermostat or start capacitor
If you hear a
crackling sound from front end of AC, then the thermostat might be defective.
When the AC is switched on it makes an audible click at the time of start. Your
AC makes this clicking sound as the thermostat sends a signal to the start
capacitor to trigger the compressor. However if there a constant clicking sound
then either the thermostat or the start capacitor has gone bad.
Coolant leakage due to ice formation on AC
Ice formation on
AC is a common problem. When this freezing is the result of refrigerant
leakage, a buzzing sound is heard from the AC unit.
Loose parts
An AC is a
complex machine of moving part working together to produce cool air. During
years of operation, some parts become loose or go bad which may produce noise
from your AC.
These are some
common reasons behind AC making noise problem but there can be other reasons as
well.
The PRO visits
clients site and troubleshoots the problem of AC making noise. The PRO first
looks for basic reasons like obstruction in fan or loose parts. Later the PRO
checks the key components of the AC like compressor, condenser, coolant,
thermistor, start capacitor, sensor and others. After the actual problem is
identified, PRO describes the problem to the customer and suggests a possible
repair or replacement. On customer consent, the PRO repairs the AC.
